NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY
Established in 1929, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship.
More than 25,000 NJHS and National Honor Society (NHS) chapters operate in all 50 states and schools around the world, engaging more than 1.6 million students in activities each year. These activities consist of leading efforts to provide:
- hours of community service,
- monetary charitable contributions,
- food, clothing and supply donations, pints of blood, and
- hosts of other service and support initiatives.
These activities often foster academic, social, mental, emotional development for the members and other students while also providing exposure to various opportunities, interests, and pursuits that might not be otherwise made available to students.
The Potomac Middle School (PTMS) NJHS chapter elevates our school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship and helps our middle-level students develop the knowledge and skills to become well-rounded student leaders in their school, community, and beyond. NJHS empowers and equips PTMS students with the knowledge and skills to be transformative leaders in the school, community, and beyond. In addition, it provides a necessary bridge between students and school leaders—helping the PTMS staff to engage and hear what PTMS students think, feel, and need and vice versa.
PTMS members are 8th grade students who become eligible based on having a 3.5 overall GPA during their 7th grade year. These eligible students are invited to apply and their applications and teacher/community recommendations are evaluated to determine if they possess and display the NJHS core pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. Selected students are then inducted into NJHS and carry out the chapter’s program and activities during their 8th grade year. Members must maintain NJHS standards, perform community service, and attend chapter meetings to remain in good standing.
