Dear Potomac Middle School Families,

On behalf of the staff at Potomac Middle School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! We are looking forward to a positive and productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We recognize that to be successful in school, our children need support from both home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:

  1. Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience. We secure the building and stop serving breakfast at 8:05 AM and ask that all students to be in their classrooms and ready for instruction.

  2. Completes all homework assignments given by the teachers. Homework is not only reflected in the child’s quarterly effort grade, but does affect the student’s ability to achieve at their highest level.

  3. Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills. Reading is a major key to academic success. Please make sure child always has a book and ask them to share what they are reading.

  4. Shares experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life. When you hear information that does not seem right, please do not hesitate to pick up the phone and give me a call.

  5. Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject. Our motto is, “Staff, Students, and Parents Working together as One.”  If your child needs additional support, we want to make sure that happens!

  6. Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school.

At Potomac, Middle School, we focus every day on providing every member of our community a safe and positive learning environment. We are a school committed to education for excellence by empowering our students to become compassionate, confident, creative, and resourceful, but also to understand and truly believe that they are responsible for their learning. At any time, every student should be able to clearly articulate their learning targets in all their classes. Our outstanding and committed staff works to ensure learning is fun, rigorous, and relevant. An important part of this work involves establishing key relationships with our students, parents, and community.

Please consider joining our school’s PTO as our students can greatly benefit from your involvement and contributions to this program and its operations. We seek volunteers to help us with the following activities:

1) Serving on one of the many committees designed to support our students.

2) Working in our school library or cafeteria.

3) Assisting with school-wide activities.

4) Working with outreach and recruitment of parent and community volunteers.

The Potomac Middle School staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to meeting you.

Mr. Kevin J. Smith
